Artist Statement

Hello! I’m Naomi, and I enjoy making art because I enjoy the process of creating something. Taking art classes gives me the opportunity to consistently make art throughout the school year, using new techniques or mediums I have never tried before. When creating art, my favorite materials are chalk pastels and acrylic paint. With both, I could create art pieces that have colors that blend together to create realistic looking artwork. My favorite piece of work that I created this school year was the pastel portrait. It's my favorite because I got to use a medium that I haven’t had the opportunity to create a full piece of artwork with. I got to use new techniques to blend the chalk pastels to create one even looking portrait. An improvement I made throughout the course of this class was being able to correct my proportions in my art. I learned how to make objects fit properly on paper and make them look proportional to one another.

Medium: Color pencil

I chose to draw the shell because I liked its appearance. I thought drawing the shell would be a challenge for me. I wanted to challenge myself into drawing something I normally wouldn't draw. In the end I ended up loving the final result and I am glad I chose the shell.

Medium: Oil pastel

At first this project was a little challenging. Figuring out the proportions of the books was difficult because if I drew the lines wrong the book would end up looking slanted. After figuring out the proportions, the coloring of the lines with oil pastels was easy. I blended different colors in the objects to make them stand out and look creative.

Cross contour still life

Medium: Prismacolor Marker

My favorite part of this project was sketching the basket on the left side of the paper. The basket took the longest to sketch and to go over with marker because of how many lines I had draw in. I enjoyed the process of creating this piece a lot.

Pastel Portrait

Medium: Chalk pastel

As a reference for this project, I took a picture of my mom. To get this picture, I had her pose in front of a blank wall in my house and flashed a green lamp on her. My favorite aspect of this portrait was how in the final result, you can still see the halo from the lamp on the wall and on her sweater.

Acrylic Collage Painting

Medium: Acrylic paint

Before starting this project, I had to create a collage from old magazines. From there I was able to sketch my collage onto the canvas board and begin painting. While creating this painting, I really enjoyed mixing the acrylic paints to get the colors that I needed.

watercolor Stairwell

Medium: Watercolor paint, colored pencil

Before starting this project, my classmates and I spent class time in the stairwell to sketch the stairs. After we understood what the stairs were meant to look like, we transferred our drawings to the final paper and painted them in with watercolor. As a final touch to the painting, I added watercolor pencils to go over some of my lines.

Oil Painting

Medium: Oil paint

This project was a little challenging for me because I had never used oil paint before. Oil paint takes longer to dry than other paints, so parts of my project would still be wet after a few days. Mixing the values of the paint was interesting because I learned how different amounts of black and white can effect a color.
